Surfing has long been a boy’s club, but women have been able to push their way into the world of surfing, except for big wave surfers. There are a handful of women out there that charge big surf and want to have access to competition. Every year the Titans of Mavericks holds a contest at Mavericks. Each year they select a handful of surfers based on skill level to compete. Over the last couple of years, the Titans of Mavericks have been under fire for not including the women in their event. Their response is , the women just aren’t there yet. But the women want their own heat so that they are given a chance to compete against each other. This year seemed like the year, but the Titans of Mavericks didn’t include a heat for the women, even after the Coastal Commission said they had to include the women.
So the women organized and created the Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing .
Taken from their website on the about page:
On Thursday, September 22, 2016 the Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing submitted a proposal to the California Coastal Commission requesting a women’s division in the Mavericks Surf contest.
The Cartel/Titians of Mavericks 2016-2017 application for a Coastal Development Permit will be considered by the Coastal Commission at the November hearing near Half Moon Bay.
